Sri Lanka to introduce a certified price for rubber 2014-09-02

Sri Lanka Minister of Plantations Industries Mahinda Samarasinghe said that the government has taken steps to introduce a certified price for rubber.

The Minister said the government has decided to pay the difference between the certified price and the actual market price in case the actual price is lower than the registered price.

Accordingly, the difference is to be paid to the rubber grower.

The Minister pointed out that the price of rubber has gone down internationally and the local price has also decreased due to that reason.

He rejected allegations that the price drop is due to importing rubber latex. He said that only the essential amount of latex is imported and 75 percent of the local rubber harvest is used for production industries locally.

The Minister also said that rubber cultivation has been introduced in new districts as well to increase the production to be sufficient for the local consumption.
